Dr. David P. Carbone, professor of medicine & cancer biology at Vanderbilt University, is a Harold L. Moses Chair and co-leader of the thoracic/head and neck cancer research program at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. In addition, he serves as the Director and Principal Investigator of the Vanderbilt Specialized Program of Research Excellence in Lung Cancer.

Research

All of Dr. Carbone’s grant support, research and publications have focused on lung cancer, specifically lung cancer genetics, cancer immunotherapy, tumor-associated immunosuppression mechanisms and gene therapy. Dr. Carbone’s recent research includes molecular profiling of lung cancers and preneoplasias, particularly with the use of mass spectrometry-based proteomics. He is also engaged in a number of open clinical trials. These are known by the following titles:

  • A Phase III Randomized Trial of Adjuvant Chemotherapy With or Without Bevacizumab for Patients With Completely Resected Stage IB (>=4 cm)-IIIA Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)

Dr. Carbone’s extensive list of other medical activities includes the publication of over 100 peer-reviewed publications and review articles. In addition, he has served on several NCI grant review panels, and continues to receive the same NCI funding that he began receiving early in his career. Other distinctions for Dr. Carbone include serving on organizing committees for both ASCO and AACR. Currently, Dr. Carbone serves as Chair of the Lung Biology subcommittee for the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, in addition to being board member for the Scientific Counselors for the NCI.

Educational Background and Early Employment

In 1977, Dr. Carbone graduated summa cum laude from Amherst College. He then received his M.D. and Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Genetics at Johns Hopkins University in 1985. Dr. Carbone followed up these degrees with an Internal Medicine internship and residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital through 1988. This was followed by a Medical Oncology fellowship at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland.

1991 saw Dr. Carbone’s appointment as an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He was promoted to an associate professor with tenure in 1995. Vanderbilt University then recruited him in 1996, where he was promoted to a full professorship in 1998.
