Dr. David M. Jablons currently serves as the chief of Thoracic Surgery at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center. As an expert in the field of thoracic cancer, Dr. Jablons also serves as the Program Leader for Thoracic Oncology, as well as the Director of the Thoracic Oncology Lab at the UCSF Medical Center.

Growing up in New York City, Dr. Jablons went on to receive a medical degree from Albany Medical College of Union University New York. During his time at medical school, he was awarded a preceptorship at the National Cancer Institute. He would go on to be trained at the NCI by Dr. Steven Rosenberg, a world famous tumor immunologist and oncologist.

Following his early schooling, Dr. Jablons started residency at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston. Once he completed his surgical oncology fellowship at the National Cancer Institute, Dr. Jablons went on to receive advanced cardiothoracic training at Cornell Medical Center and Sloan-Kettering Medical Center in New York.

After his schooling, residency and fellowships, Dr. Jablons served in active duty for the U.S. Navy. He was appointed Commander and Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the Naval Hospital at Oakland Oak Knoll. In 1995, Dr. Jablons joined the UCSF Medical Center to help develop a program in thoracic surgery and oncology. He was appointed as the Chief of General Thoracic Surgery and began to focus study on molecular biology and genomics.

Dr. Jablons assembled a team at the UCSF Medical Center to explore cutting edge surgery and therapy techniques for fighting lung cancer and mesothelioma. Some of his most important projects included isolating lung cancer stem cells, inflammation of long carcinogenesis, as well as lung cancer system genetics. Dr. Jablons and his team are widely known for their role in the awareness of tissue banking. They have created one of the most extensive thoracic tissue banks in the world.

Board certified in both surgery and thoracic surgery, Dr. Jablons is also a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He is also a key member in the American Association of Cancer Research, the International Association of the Study of Lung Cancer, and the American Association of the Advancement of Science, among other high profile organizations.

Dr. Jablons is also renowned for his clinical outreach. He helped to create the UCSF Thoracic Oncology Conference, one of the original programs of its kind. He co-chaired the biannual Pan Pacific Lung Cancer Conference and the yearly UCSF Clinical Cancer Update, as well the 13th World Conference on Lung Cancer in 2009. Dr. Jablons has had work published in hundreds of peer reviewed journals on a variety of different topics, but primarily involving mesothelioma.
