Dr. Michele Carbone acts as the Center Director at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center. In addition, he serves as the Program Director of that facility and a leading mesothelioma researcher. An internationally respected scientist, especially in the mesothelioma field, he and his team have studied the impact of environmental carcinogens, genetics and viral infections on mesothelioma development. Along with this research, he and his team have developed preventive and therapeutic treatments.

Born in Rome, Italy in 1960, Dr. Carbone became a U.S. citizen in 2000. Along with acting as the Director of the Cancer Center of the University of Hawaii, he serves as the Professor of Pathology at the John A. Burns School of Medicine. Board certified in Anatomic Pathology, he came to the United States in 1986 as a recipient of the Fogarty Fellow Award. He then worked at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland until until 1994, when he moved to the University of Chicago.

1997 saw Dr. Carbone move to the Cancer Center of the Loyola University of Chicago, later becoming the Professor of Pathology and Director of Thoracic Oncology. He joined the Cancer Center of the University of Hawaii in 2006. Dr. Carbone has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers, with most focusing on the causes of mesothelioma.

Education

Dr. Carbone graduated from the Medical School of Rome “La Sapienza” in 1984. He earned his PhD in anatomical and clinical pathology from the University of Chicago.
